Granite City Fall Festival – Nov. 5

Granite City Fall Festival

Granite City Fall Festival

I have begun making arrangements to be at the Granite City Fall Festival in my hometown of Elberton, Georgia on November 5, 2011. I have talked to the officials at the Chamber of Commerce and arranged for a spot where I will be selling and signing books. Come on out and pick up a few for Christmas presents. I’ll be sure to offer a special.

It will be from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on the square in downtown Elberton. For more information call the Elbert County Chamber of Commerce at 706-283-5651. You may also see a nice little flyer for the festival by reading their October Newsletter. It promises to be a great fall day there.

So those of you back home in Elberton who have been asking will have no excuse for not coming around to see me and get a book signed. I hope to see lots of my old friends and even make some new ones while I am at it.

Gallant Soldiers – 14th SC, Co. I

Reunion photo of McCalla's Rifles

Reunion photo of McCalla's Rifles

For those interested in the South Carolina Volunteers during the War for Southern Independence, there is a fresh new book out. “Gallant Soldiers, Four Years with McCalla Rifles” by E. Wayne Wilson details the history of Company I, Fourteenth South Carolina Infantry, Gregg’s-McGowan’s Brigade — known as McCalla’s Rifles — organized out of Lowndesville, South Carolina. Lowndesville, also in Abbeville County is only a few miles from the section where the “Boys of Diamond Hill” hailed from.

If you come out to see me at the Olde South Thanksgiving and Harvest Festival in Abbeville on Nov. 19, 2011, you may meet Wayne there as well. If you don’t have this opportunity, you may order “Gallant Soldiers” directly from the author by clicking the link and printing the following form: GPS Publicity 1.pdf

Now I’m International!

Kings College at Cambridge University

While checking out WorldCat.org — where you can find where a book is in networked libraries around the world — today I found that “The Boys of Diamond Hill” can now be checked out from Cambridge University in the United Kingdom. Now British scholars will have the chance to peer into a window of understanding of how the War for Southern Independence was for ordinary farmers from Abbeville, South Carolina.

Long Ride to Yesterday by R.G. Yoho

Long Ride to Yesterday
By R. G. Yoho
White Feather Press, Hamilton, MI

Reviewed by Keith Jones

“Long Ride to Yesterday” is essentially the “secret origins” of Gain Carson, a character included in Yoho’s other Westerns as an ancillary character. It had previously been released by another publisher, but now is being re-released so it will be available to a wider audience gained from his more recent Westerns: “Death Comes to Redhawk” and “Death Rides the Rail.”

In “Long Ride…” we find Gain Carson returning to a place he had since left behind and confronting a reputation he had tried to escape. Gain is a man whose advancing age, small frame and unassuming manner hide a deadly past and a man who remains deadly when challenged. Now the only woman he has ever loved needs his help so Gain Carson returns to Abilene, Kansas to an uncertain fate and more surprises than he can anticipate.

“Long Ride to Yesterday” is fast paced and adds extra flesh to Yoho’s Kellen Malone series of books. If you enjoy Westerns of the old days, “Long Ride…” will be a great addition to your reading list.

Olde South Thanksgiving – Abbeville, SC

I have been invited to be a featured author at the Olde South Thanksgiving and Harvest Festival on the square in Abbeville, SC on November 19, 2011.

It will be good to be there in the town that the Boyd brothers of “The Boys of Diamond Hill” called home.

The festival will begin the afternoon before on Friday November 18 at about 4:00 with a musical at the Trinity Street Stable just off the square from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm. Saturday, there will be free events all day plus a ball from 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm for which there is a charge as there is for the musical on Friday night, but most of the events are free, so come on out. There will be reenactors both days and other entertainment. See the full schedule here.

Come on out and see me, I should be set up on the square and will be selling my books. If you are native that the Abbeville area, you just might have ancestors mentioned in “The Boys of Diamond Hill.” Drop by. I’ll enjoy discussing it with you.

Tim Johnston of Short Story America

Tonight I had the chance to talk with Tim Johnston the editor of Short Story America, a really great free online short story magazine. He was at Barnhill’s in Winston Salem signing copies of their annual anthology. Here we are pictured with the copy I had just bought. He has agreed to an interview here in the near future.

The Road to Secession This Weekend

I hope to see you all out this weekend for a great event at Bennett Place State Park. They will be sponsoring one of their signature events called, The Road to Secession, kicking off their observance of the Sesquicentennial of the War for Southern Independence.

I will be speaking on Saturday at 3:30 and Sunday at 1:00 on the part played by Daniel and Pressley Boyd and their unit, the 7th South Carolina Infantry during the first year of the war.

For a taste of this, check out my Sesquicentennial series on the Boyds.

This description comes from their site:

October 8-9 Bennett Place Historic Site. Road To Secession.

This is a signature event of the 150th Anniversary of the American Civil War commemorative series. In July 1861 the first major battle of the American Civil War was fought in Manassas , Virginia. The new Confederacy won the battle, and new recruits from the local communities began to swell the ranks South and North. Experience what life was like for the people of Piedmont North Carolina during the beginning months of the American Civil War. A recruitment station and encampment will be established on the grounds of the Bennett Farm, much like camps organized throughout North Carolina and the South, recruiting men to defend the Southern cause. Nineteenth century civilian interpreters will enlist in the army and be transformed into soldiers. Stump speeches, patriotic music, and other relative activities will demonstrate the spirit of the Southern cause. Civilian interpreters will also exhibit the domestic chores such as cooking, sewing and gardening as their husbands and sons headed off to war. Program is Saturday 10am-4pm and Sunday 10am-3pm. Admission is FREE and donations graciously accepted. For More Information Contact: 919-383-4345 or bennett@ncdcr.gov.
